Calamity Not a Sign of God's Displeasure

Greetings from a cold and windy, Stratford, New Zealand.

The past few days have been very enjoyable weather-wise, but today winter re-asserted itself with a vengeance. Just as well, the Kingdom Hall was well heated for this morning's Public Talk and Watchtower.

We enjoyed the study article entitled "Jehovah Will Not Forsake His People", and the sentence in paragraph 2 "Are calamities evidence of God's displeasure?" aroused some mirth when the WT study conductor shared an experience with us.

He's a Regular Pioneer, had been in the field ministry last Thursday and decided to take an hour off field service to view a large load being moved along the main road to a power station being built just outside Stratford. This load was about 650 metric tons - 1 tonne = 1000kg (about 2250lbs) - and excited some attention in the local community. However, as he was driving along the road, a Police car pulled in behind and followed for a while. It then passed him, pulled into the roadside about 100 metres ahead, the officer got out and flagged the brother down. He then lectured the brother about driving too slow, and causing problems for following traffic.

Incorrectly suggesting he shouldn't have left off in field service that morning, the WTS conductor then asked "Are calamities evidence of God's displeasure?"
